CHAPTER 13

The team was saying their goodbyes to Cipher as my phone chimed. I grabbed it from my pocket and made a mental note to add the contact names in soon. Daryn had been true to his word and provided a new phone but I needed to update the information. “Hello?”

“Hey, Mom,” Caleb said.

My shoulders slumped. “I’m sorry, honey. I should’ve called you.”

“No problem. Are you on your way home now? I’d really like to talk to you and Daryn.”

I glanced over at Daryn as he stood talking at the bottom of the stairs to Kaine and Indigo. “Daryn, can we head over to my house? Caleb wants to have a word.”

He nodded, then patted Kaine on the back. “I will see you two later. We will do a team dinner tomorrow.” Indego jogged up the steps with her twin following her.

“We will be there in ten minutes,” I said before hanging up the phone. The rec room was eerily quiet as Daryn rejoined me on the couch.

“You seem nervous. Caleb wants to join the hunters and is looking for information and possibly a way to start sooner. It won’t happen, but we will answer all his questions and calm any fears he has about you.”

I frowned. “Why would Caleb have any fears about me? You think he fears my power?”

“Not at all. He is still your son and worries about your safety. He knows you haven’t been properly trained, although you have far more than we believed. I had no idea that Annette taught you all her spells at such a young age. That’s unheard of.”

I put my head down. “She went to see the oracles. I guess she took their warning pretty seriously, but I have the feeling there was more to their deal.”

Daryn put his hand on the small of my back and pulled me against his body. “There always is with the oracles. The predictions do come true, so if they told her she would not see your twelfth birthday, she made sure you had all the information you needed.”

My gaze moved up to meet his. “But someone went to a lot of trouble to make sure those spells died with her. If someone actually felt I was a threat, why not remove me as a child?”

Daryn pursed his lips. “That’s the question, isn’t it? Someone made sure you were out of town, but they didn’t believe you had magic. They didn’t believe you were a threat. It’s a conundrum and one I plan to figure out.”

“Let’s head over to the house and see what Caleb wants to talk about.” I smiled at Daryn when he took my hand and led me up the stairs.

We grabbed our jackets and shoes and headed out to the SUV. The streetlights flashed by one by one, but there were few people on the road and the quiet hum of the vehicle was soothing. My eyes closed, and I drifted off for a few minutes until Daryn slammed the vehicle in park.
